Metallaxis on Sustainability: Learn about lab grown meat.

The idea of lab-grown meat may be new to you. But dozens of firms have started the process of developing cultivated meat and chicken and there is a good reason why.

The cultivated meat industry can be a massive agent of change, aiding in the creation of a sustainable future for coming generations. On average, cultivated meat can produce 10 times more than the industry standard “while generating 80 percent less greenhouse gas emissions, using 99 percent less land and 96 percent less freshwater all while delivering the same nutritional value as traditional meat”. If you consider that today, livestock production corresponds to 14.5% of total GHG emissions (equivalent to 7,1 gigatones of carbon dioxide) and that it is the largest single sectoral source of methane and nitrous oxide, you can see that lab-grown meat constitutes an important solution.

But how is it made? Is it safe? Is it healthy? Is it expensive?

  • Most companies use adult stem cells from a live animal and cultivate it in a laboratory.
  • Artificial meat is as safe or safer than real meat as it is produced in a highly controlled environment.
  • It is packed with protein and vitamins and is believed to be healthier than regular meat due to its lower fat content.
  • When it was first produced it costed €250,000 per piece. It now costs less than 8 EUR and the price is expected to grow even further in 2022.

What is lab grown meat? A scientist explains the taste, production and safety of artificial foods

Also known as cultured or cell-based meat, artificial meat is grown from animal cells in a laboratory. Start-up companies have grown artificial beef, pork, chicken and even fish. However, none is commercially available yet. There are different ways to grow artificial meat, but most use adult stem cells from a live animal.
